Welcome to my Web Blog; Powers Behind Grand Rapids. This is my first attempt to share some of materials I have gathered over the years on the early history of Grand Rapids, Michigan and the Powers and Ball families. They originally came from New Hampshire, having spent the better part of ten years in Lansingburgh and Troy, New York before arriving in Grand Rapids. This is the story behind John Ball and his extended family that settled the Grand River Valley. Remnants of the family are still present nearly 170 years later.

Some of the Powers and Ball descendants include; Winslow, Currier, Chaffee, Pipp, Poisson, Putnam, DiPiazza, Webster, Heath…

In addition I’m hoping to share about those friends of the family that have influenced us and the world. Some of those are; Margaret and Maude Fealy, former President Gerald R. and First Lady Betty Ford, Spencer Tracy, Dean Jagger, Selena Royle…

Thank you for visiting. Enjoy.

  1. 1708 first edition book with early BALL Inscriptions
Good Morning from the UK.Please forgive this method of contact but I am seeking knowledgeable assistance and saw your work on the Ball name.
I have recently acquired a first edition ‘A Warning against the Quakers’by Antonia Bourignon printed in 1708.Few copies exist(none has been sold for 40 years) and this to me is interesting but additionally the book has four previous owners handwritten script from the 18th century which I believe may be early immigrants to America or descendants of them.
Briefly they are; John BALL,who bought the book in England in 1708,Isaac BALL 1781,Sarah BALL 1784,John BALL 1791,Plus a later label of R H FOOKS.(who was linked to the British goverment and who probably returned the book to England)

John Ball writes ‘John Ball is my name and England is my nation and Dointon is My Dwelling place and Christ is My Salvation amen’plus a further script in the same hand dated 1791..The emphasis on England could also relate to him being in a new country and within a generation of the War of Independence, but equally any other area I have yet to discover.

Sarah Ball’s has a dated birth of 1784,Isaac Ball is listed as a birth in 1781.
I appreciate these first names are common.I cannot find records of these dated births or Dointon in the UK and they do not relate to birth dates found on various internet sites or papers by Claudette Maerz of the PA Ball family

I was wondering if this linked up with any research any of you have done.I am intending to sell the book eventually but find the research totally absorbing,

Best Regards Clive Myhill (Norfolk UK)
